An introduction… Miss Eleanore – BENTWAVE

Introducing BENTWAVE RADIO on WNYU.  Well,  not really an introduction,  truth is the show has been around for around five years.

Miss Eleanore

Miss Eleanore

While in NYC on vacation my good friend Deepak Sharma (Hidden Records) introduced me to Miss Eleanore.  Eleanore has been the one behind the decks since its birth and I was really impressed at what she does every Monday night from 10:30pm to 1:00am eastern.

She was kind enough to have a Minneapolis showcase with myself and Jacob Hoffman from Time Fog.  We will have this podcast available later but for now Here is a little from Elenore’s Face book page to give you all an idea of what to expect from the show.

Bentwave airs every monday nights, 10:30pm-1am EST on 89.1FM WNYU or worldwide www.wnyu.org

Bentwave brings the experimental side of electronic music to radio in a format you can dance to. airmail August edition… News from air london.

Posted in music on August 18th, 2010 by Aaron Bliss

airmail August edition

air london is pleased to announce the signing of five hugely talented acts to our North American talent roster.

Joining Kate Simko, M A N I K and Kris Wadsworth are new additions Pezzner, Jay Tripwire, Maher Daniel, Crazy Larry and DVS1.

Latest news from our new acts is outlined below and do get in touch by reply if you are interested in bringing any of the acts to your club.

Read on…

Pezzner

Pezzner

Pezzner (Freerange/Om) – LIVE or DJ

Seriously hot property now on the back of his newly released Freerange album ‘The Tracks Are Alive’, Pezzner has returned from touring his live show through Europe – highlights being the Balaton Sound Festival in Hungary and Space Ibiza.

Latest single ‘Blacklist’ is one of Mixmag’s 10 biggest of the month across all genres (July).

Jay Tripwire

Jay Tripwire

Jay Tripwire (Get Physical) – DJ

With a career spanning two decades, 200 releases and four full length albums, some might wonder if we have seen the best of Jay Tripwire.

No chance. Jay is still killing it as a DJ, holding a resident spot at Vancouver’s Fortune Sound Club and mixing the latest instalment of Poker Flat’s ‘Shaping Elements’ compilation alongside Steve Bug, as well as releasing music under his 8 Channels alias on highly regarded labels such as Ransom Note, NRK and Hallucination.

DVS1

DVS1

DVS1 (Klockworks/Transmat) – DJ

Although a DJ for over 15 years, it is only since August 2009 that DVS1 has put out his own music, but if these initial forays are any indicator then we have a serious new talent on our hands. His first release ‘Klockworks 05′ on Ben Klock’s Klockworks imprint (which came about a chance meeting between the pair whilst performing together) and was charted by the likes of Derrick May, Luke Slater, James Ruskin, Tana Sumo, Efdemin, Ryan Elliott and Kevin Saunderson. Further cementing his new-found status, his second release came on the legendary TRANSMAT label.

Read more on DVS1 courtesy of RA’s ‘Breaking Through’ feature

Maher Daniel

Maher Daniel

Maher Daniel (Get Physical/Souvenir) – DJ

Maher Daniel is a DJ/producer based out of Montreal, Canada and a name that you will be hearing much more of over the course of 2010 and beyond.

The name ‘Maher’ means ‘excellence’ in his native tongue and this standard is one that has been adhered to since he made his production debut on 2009’s ‘Casbar’ on Get Physical. Further releases have followed on labels such as Souvenir Music and Roots and Wings, but a gaze in to the future shows a stunning run of releases and an opportunity to share his excellence with you.

His collaboration with Matthew Dekay on Monique Special is a highlight of a sequence of four releases which should transport his name and reputation far beyond the walls of the famous Stereo Club in Montreal, where he currently holds his DJ residency. He has Maher Daniel solo productions also coming up on some of the world’s hottest labels ‘Icaros’ on Rekids, ‘Open Concept’ on Souvenir and ‘3rd Time Is A Charm’on Joris Voorn’s Rejected imprint.

Crazy Larry

Crazy Larry

Crazy Larry (Time To Get iLL) – LIVE or DJ

Currently residing in the depths of Bushwick, Brooklyn, and getting inspiration from DJ’s like Koze, Three, Matthias Tanzmann and Pedro, Crazy Larry is building on a name already made in Denver throwing parties and booking events at both Shelter and Vinyl Nightclubs, and as the purveyor of numerous debaucherous after hours (namely his Udder Madness and Cheap Sunglasses parties). Larry now devotes much of his time to new project, the ‘Time To Get iLL’ label, born off the back of Brooklyn based shindigs of the same name.

The label’s first release will come from Glacier – Larry’s current project with production partner Pier Bucci – with their ‘Cabeza’ release, which is slated to appear in October. This follows an offering from them ‘The Rocky Mountains’ which appeared on Wagon Repair back in 2007.

Other Crazy Larry releases have come via staple American labels Siteholder, AirDrop, Fade, Auralism and hip Brooklyn based label Hallucination. Future Time to Get iLL projects on the horizon include releases from contemporaries Soul Clap, Tanner Ross and Adam Collins, which showcase shared influences from old school R&B, soul, and funk genres – placing Larry well within the current slow-down-and-low-down zeitgeist.

Meet your Bassgasm2 DJs, Vol. 2: From City Pages

Posted in music on July 20th, 2010 by Aaron Bliss

Jen Hits the City Pages with yet another jam packed post on Bassgasm2

By Jen Boyles, Fri., Jul. 16 2010
Categories: DJ Q&A

It’s almost that time, bass fanatics. Woody McBride’s second takeover of First Avenue in six months goes down in just one week. Next Friday, more than 60 DJs will descend upon the club and play some of the funkiest, ear-splitting, heavens-opening tracks known (or not known) to man for nearly 10 hours. For most people, this sounds like hell on Earth, but for a certain group in the Midwest, bound by years of partying in dirty warehouses together, this is simply bliss. Last week, we introduced you to 3 DJs on the roster, and this week we’re bringing you another three, something we’ll do all next week leading up to the big day (July 23). Oh, and one other thing: Gimme Noise has THIRTEEN PAIR of tickets to the show to give away next week, so if you want to go, stay tuned. For now, it’s time to meet the sexy one called Heavygrinder, Chi-Town’s own Keith Mackenzie, and NYC’s longtime favorite, Christian Bruna …

Gimme Noise: How’s 2010 treating you?
Heavygrinder: It’s been well. Have been playing in different states and working on more releases and working on including my own vocals on tracks.

What’s your favorite memory of Minneapolis?
Headlined an all female dj party with DJ Heather a few years ago and had a blast. Really looking forward to that great crowd that appreciates the music. It’s an honor to be featured along side with many of the artists on the line up.

Do you miss record shopping now that the industry has gone digital?
Yes, I definitely miss record shopping but the digitalization has made it a lot easier for us to get the tracks that we want.

Give us your favorite quote from someone who will inspire us:
“Music doesn’t lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.” -Jimi Hendrix

Thoughts on trends in the EDM scene right now?
I have noticed the decline in the house scene… as I use to play morevstraight house music and dnb.  Have also noticed the sudden rise in the dubstep scene. Kids love it.

Keith MacKenzie - Chop Sticks.JPG

Getting to know… KEITH MACKENZIE

2. DJ Icey – Seville
3. Nylon Pink - Fluff
4. Sandro Silva – Blaze
5. DJ Fixx and Sporty-O – Shake It Sporty

8. Kultur and Colombo – 123 Breakbeat
9. Deekline and Dustin Hulton featuring Sporty-O – Apple Bottom
10. Curtis B and Whiskey Pete – Keep on Movin’

How is 2010 treating you?
It’s been excellent so far!  I’ve gotten to play at some really great places this year including London, Rome, Cadiz (Spain), Hawaii and more!  I’ve been keeping super busy with my label “illeven eleven” putting out about 4 releases per quarter.

What are your current creative projects?
As a label, we have an album from ATL phenom rapper Sporty-O called “International Wingman” coming out in mid July.  It has productions from some of the biggest names in Electro, Breaks and Dubstep in the package.  For myself,  Ive been doing alot of work with DJ Fixx and Curtis B and have about 5-6 things slated to come out before the end of 2010.  Also working on a breaks meets electro meets house and techno mix with my boy Serch from here in the CHI

What’s your next production release?
A remix of LaZRtag’s song that they did with Whiskey Pete on the vocals called “Young Hollywood”  coming out on my label “illeven eleven”  I did the remix with Curtis B.

Have you been to Minneapolis before?
This will be first time and Im really looking forward to it!  Ive heard only good things about the scene in Minneapolis. Im super excited that Bassgasm will be my first party there, and judging by all the hype around it, it looks as though Minneapolis knows how to get down! Additionally, breaks do not get that much exposure in the midwest so Im glad to bring my flavor there.

Are you influenced by any Twin Cities artists?
I used to buy Freddy Fresh records back in the day =)

How do you feel about the industry going digital?
I for sure miss record shopping, the feel of vinyl and the sound as well.  However, Im cool with the industry going digital.  I like playing/doing re-edits of stuff and this is not stuff that we used to do back when we played vinyl.  if we did a re-edit of something and wanted to play it, we would have to get dubplates and it takes time and money!  Now, I can re-edit a song in the hotel the night of and play it immediately Dubplates  were fun though!  I definitely miss vinyl but am content DJing digitally.

Dark. Brooding. Bruna.

Getting to know … CHRISTIAN BRUNA

Free Downloadable Mix: “Kiss The Future”

Top 10 Chart:
01. Kabuki feat. Jeru The Damaja – Watch Your Step – V Recordings
02. Christian Bruna – Imagine That – Liquid Brilliants
03. Netsky – Eyes Closed – Allsorts
04. Kabuki feat. Jenna G – Just Hold On (Serum Remix) – V Recordings
05. Camo & Krooked feat. Tali – Verve – Audio Porn
06. Eveson – Found A Groove – Liquid V
07. Dave Owen – Still Waters – Influence Records
08. Eveson – So Fine- Liquid V
09. Camo & Krooked – History of The Future – Audio Porn
10. Gridlok – Bottomfeeder – Project 51 Recordings
Gimme Noise: How is 2010 treating you?
Christian Bruna: Not bad, I’m alive and well. My family and children are healthy, and I feel like it’s the early 90’s again, in more than one way. I’ve been doing things that I’ve enjoyed since I was a youngster, recreational activities such as painting (graffiti), and skateboarding. I’m feeling very positive in regards to this second phase of my life.

Why do you think you were booked to play Bassgasm 2?
The experience and knowledge based on years of doing my thing here in NYC. The competition is fierce and many people succeed, but come and go. Very few can stand the test of time. Looking forward to Woody’s parties and seeing how the Mid-West brings it!

What kind of vibe are you playing this summer?
I’m basically trying to cram in some of the best Jungle/D&B from the last 15 years or so into one power-packed roller coaster of a ride. In the wise words of the infamous KRS-ONE, “Edutainment” is how I’d best describe it.

Which artists are you inspired by lately?
Camo & Krooked, Netsky, Serum, Mutated Forms, Savage Rehab, and others…

What do you think has changed most about the scene over the last 5-10 years?
The word Rave is practically non-existent. Promoters, press, and the media are using the word “Festivals” more and more, as opposed to the word “Rave” and its negative connotations. EDM genres are being mixed up more than ever, even crossing over into Jam Bands and more live pa’s.

How do you feel about the industry going digital?
I think it’s great since I get most of my music sent to me from all over the world via AIM. I already have too much vinyl and wouldn’t know what to do with it if I kept buying. I do miss the act of buying and sellingrecords at a record shop. I used to work at the now defunct Satellite Records here in NYC for many, many years.

Tell us your favorite quote.
I don’t know who said it first, but it’s my favorite. “Feel The Force, Don’t Force The Feel.”

Meet your Bassgasm2 DJs, Vol. 1:From City Pages

Posted in music on July 15th, 2010 by Aaron Bliss
bassgasm1.jpg
Bassgasm 1 – Denis Jeong Plaster for CP

I really can not say enough kind things about City Pages and Jen Boyels!  Below is one of her latest Blogs on our little scene – Take a moment to see what Jen has to say and read a little bit of q&a with myself and some of my amazing friends!

By Jen Boyles, Fri., Jul. 9 2010 @ 2:04PM

There are a lot of reasons people go to parties, but just one that will unite hundreds of dance music fans from around the Midwest for one of Woody McBride’s legendary massives — and that, dear friends, is the muthaf**ing bass. Packing 60-some odd DJs and more visuals and surprises than you can fathom, BASSGASM 2 is coming up quickly so we’re doing an interview series with 10 of the beat lovers scheduled behind the decks July 23 at First Avenue. Here are 3 locals to get to know now if you’ve not already: longtime scene rocker Easyrider, former Stepper’s Alliance DJ Aaron Bliss and ferocious female duo Kittybump.

easyrider.jpg
The droid you’ve come for isn’t here

Getting to know… EASYRIDER:
Bassgasm top ten Chart:
Lil Silva – Night Skanker EP – Nightslugs
Ikonika – Idiot (Altered Natives Remix) – Hyperdub
Meesha – Daat – Thoughtless Music
Artificial Intelligence – There’s a Crowd – V Recordings
Man Like Me – Lovestruck (Brackles Remix) – Black Butter Records
Marky & S.P.Y. – Riff Raff – Digital Soundboy
Four Tet – SIng (Mosca Remix) – Domino
Netsky – Escape fest. Darrison – Hospital Records
Deadboy – If U Want Me – Numbers
My My – Price Tag (Appleblim Remix) – Simple Records

Gimme Noise: How is 2010 treating you?
Easyrider: Things are really looking good, our regular Wednesday night, Konkrete Jungle Minneapolis at First Avenue is running over three years strong now, it keeps growing and evolving, and personally I am very busy between gigs, production and life – I just bought a house this year, so really just enjoying the fantastic Minneapolis lifestyle…

What are you working on currently?
I’ve completed about 6 tracks earlier this year and I’m now gearing up for another wave. I love a lot of music of different tempos and styles out there right now and I moved my studio into my new house so I’ve got a whole performance/studio/record repository going on and am really looking to take advantage of the space.

Favorite memory in Minneapolis?
Some of my best Minneapolis memories are Woody’s legendary massives, no joke – they really were that amazing and I’m sure Bassgasm will be the same.

What artists are you loving currently?
Mosca, Lil Silva, Original Sin, Altered Natives, Breakage, Danny Byrd, Tinie Tempah

How do you feel about DJing now that the industry has gone digital?
I still buy, collect and play mostly all vinyl in my dnb sets. I use Traktor and Serato in the clubs and at home for everything else…With “DVS” I enjoy the freedom to go back and forth between vinyl and digital. I’ve got thousands and thousands of records, I can’t imagine not being able to return to the source for my inspiration once and awhile. I have an open mind, but to me, vinyl is still in the heart and soul of our culture.

What do you think of the Bassgasm 2 lineup? It’s a lot. Guaranteed good time. The last one was legendary.

Any last thoughts? Music will never stop. It will live as long as people are around and maybe a good deal longer.

Mr. Kind Eyes

Getting To Know…. AARON BLISS

Gimme Noise: How is 2010 treating you?
Aaron Bliss: It has been an amazing year for me so far, I’ve been meeting and working with so many people and learning so many things about the music and the business.

What are your current creative projects?
I recently started working as the head of North American operations for Air London Music as an artist manger/agent, representing artists like, Kris Wadsworth, MANIK, Kate Simko, Nick Curley, and more.  I’m working on a new pop/r&b flavored house project with Amin Shabazz and Scott Radke. Most recently, I had the honor of working with three of the most amazing promoters in the US to throw a party in Detroit: Beretta, [KONTROL], and Humanaut. Even though the party had a few issues, it was a great experience.

How do you feel the dance music scene has changed most over the last 10 years? I really see dance music growing in the US. And now there are so many amazing parties in the US. Ten years ago, it was unheard of to see a major headliner play a room like the VIP/Record Room and 7th Street. This isn’t just happening here in Minneapolis, but all over. El Paso, Pittsburgh, and so many more, and dont get me started on Mexico!  Mexico is on the map big time.  Ten years ago, you didn’t see this. I buy it all and I love it all. Its called techno – “tech” short for technology. Embrace it.

What are your thoughts on playing Bassgasm?
Last year, I was allowed to play Both the main room system and the Entry system. For me the Main room system was amazing. The vibe in the Entry was tops, I pretty much spent the whole night in there!

Which Minneapolis artists are you influenced most by?

JET, Prince, Information Society, Chic (Won’t you take me to….  Funky town!)

What’s your favorite party you’ve DJed or attended?

DJing would have to be a cross between this last Detroit party and believe it or not, Fargo.  I played a party in Fargo that was broken up due to a blizzard.  EasyRider and myself were invited to play in this little basement at about 4am. We played classics till the sun came up.  The place was packed and the love was amazing. Party wise, there’s so many to list but my time in NYC. There was a party there called Bliss and it was the best times dancing in my life. I even took my name from those nights.

kittybump.jpg
What’s a kittybum…er…ok we get it

Getting to know… KITTYBUMP
DOWNLOADABLE MIX: Kibbles & 8 Bits

Gimme Noise: How is 2010 treating you?
Kitty Bump: Quite well thanks! Been working touring the midwest and getting ready to release our new EP, KittyBump presents : Fresh Step (our own new EDM genre).

What is your favorite memory of Minneapolis?
SNDP @ First Avenue!

How do you feel the dance music scene has changed most over the last 10 years?
We’re a little saddened that vinyl got kicked out the door, however, it is a great thing to have 1000+ tracks at your fingertips in the digital world these days, but vinyl is our first love. We don’t miss the prices of record shopping, but the thought of flipping through stack of vinyl makes us nostalgic. Also, all of the music we grew up on is making a comeback. AWESOME to hear it again.

How do you feel about playing Bassgasm 2?
We’re quite familiar with Woody’s “wall of bass” parties and are really excited. We’re glad you e-mailed this interview instead of live, we can’t hear SHIT anymore.

One Night in Heaven…

Posted in music on May 14th, 2010 by Aaron Bliss

This year something special happened.

The Particle People set out to do something a little more risky than normal (knowing us you would know we like to take these kinds of risks) *wink wink*

So,  it all started with an idea to throw a Berghain related after hrs in Detroit, we had no idea it would become what it has today.

Shortly after investigating and setting up this idea we realized it would be much more fun to have more friends involved…

With Minneapolis’s Particle People MPLS, San Francisco’s [KONTROL] and Detroit’s Beretta Music came on board and soon after Pittsburgh’s Humanaut Crew. We all knew at that moment that this was much more than a party but much more like a major production and event.

With tons of craziness, lots and lots of organization, full support from Paxahau, Metroplex, and others we were finally able to assemble a true Techno Voltron!

I honestly can not be more excited to announce what many people are calling The top after hrs for Saturday night, and very proud to be a part of something as monumental as this.

Dan Bell, Ben Klock, Levon Vincent, DVS1, all the dj’s from Particle People, [Kontrol], Beretta and Humanaut…  how can you not be excited?!

SO……

As an extra added bonus to this weeks Jack The Box,  I was able to sneak a few min from Dan Bell for a quick Q-A

DAN BELL

DAN BELL

*You’ve been in Berlin for nearly 10 years now. Safe to say this is where you will be for a while now? Any plans to return to the US?
When I’m not traveling I spend most of my time in New York.  I’ve been back and forth between the U.S. and Germany for some time now. It’s hard for me to say where I’ll be living in a few years – I like to keep my options open.

* What is it about Berlin that keeps you there?
It’s the center for electronic music.  I don’t think anybody would dispute that.  Also, it’s an easy city to live in… relatively stress free when compared to other cities it’s size.  The only bad point is the weather.  If Berlin was on the Mediterranean I would never leave.

* While on the discussion of Cities, What is your favorite US city to play and why? (its ok if you say Minneapolis) *wink wink*
I like to dj everywhere in the U.S…. some of the smaller cities have been the most fun.  Last weekend I did a 9 hour set at the Compound in San Francisco and there was still a good amount of people there until 8 or 9 in the morning who were totally up for it.  So for that reason I have to go with SF

*OK,  OK,  So Minneapolis inst the fave (I will have to change that in post, j/k)  One thing I have been wanting know for some time now is….

Seventh City: In your RA interview in May of 08 you mentioned a revival of the label and of DBX… Any chance that this will be coming back? if not..  why not?
I would like nothing more than to invest my time into making music and working on the labels and maybe sometime soon I will take a break from djing to do that.

DBX LOOSING CONTROL

DBX

* follow-up to question #4 -You seem to have a way with developing and exposing new artists, if there are no plans to resurrect Seventh City, Are there any plans to start another label?
There is no plans to start another label.  It will only be Accelerate, Elevate and Seventh City from here on out. None of those labels are finished – there will still be new releases coming from all of them.

*That has to be the best news I’ve heard this year!!  Any new up and coming artists we should keep an eye out for?
It’s funny but I find the guys who have been around forever are putting out the more interesting music be it Baby Ford, Delano Smith, KDJ, Shake etc.  There have been some exceptions but the a lot of “newer”  music is lacking that bite when compared to different eras.

* What excites you most about coming back to Detroit this year?
Seeing old friends and making new ones..

*We can NOT WAIT to hear what you have in store for us Thank you Dan for taking the time and chatting with us!

People – DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW in DETROIT!!!  Thank you for the support.

Interview and Jackcast with John Johr…

Posted in music on April 14th, 2010 by Aaron Bliss

With only about 7 weeks to till the best music festival in the world (imho) I found it necessary to feature one of our friends to the North. The latest addition to Jack The Box is an interview and podcast from John Johr.

I first met John last year just before Movement Detroit (DEMF) when my buddy Grimace introduced us. Grimace says..”Aaron you gotta meet his guy your gonna love him, great DJ, right up your alley!” Seriously,  that’s all he had to say, because he really knows his shit. Taking Gimace’s advice I went on-line, started looking and found a couple mixes of his… “DAMN!” I said.

Smooth, deep, and sexy rhythms is all that needs to be said.  John shows a side of Techno and House music that can only come from Detroit. His mixes are tight and so well composed that you have to feel it to believe it (notice i didn’t say hear it?) John’s sets are just that “Body Music”

I was able to sneak John away for an interview to talk about his time with Paxahau, the current sound of Detroit, and much more, not to mention some of that “Body Music” I was telling you about.

**What are your impressions of the Midwest dance music scene?

I love the Midwest scene! It has qualities that you’ll see no where else in the world and that makes it great. Having lived in Detroit my whole life it’s been amazing to have institutions like Motor, Recordtime, Submerge/UR, and even places like Motown/Hitsville USA in my back yard. Not a lot of people have been or are as lucky to have so much great music and music history so close to home. I’ve also been very lucky to have attended or worked at the festival (Movement or also known as DEMF early on) every year. In my eyes the Midwest dance scene has a lot to offer. Some of the best dj’s and producers in the world have come from the Midwest. I feel pretty lucky to be honest.

**For those of us that dont know Paxahau and Movement could you Tell us a little bit about your work with Paxahau?

I started with Paxahau in early 2005. My main role back then was doing party set-up’s and street promotions, as well I was invited to be one of the resident dj’s. As time went on my role progressed into doing the audio archives and internet promotions. We took over the festival in 2006 and though it’s a lot of work I’ve learned more from that then anything else I’ve been involved in throughout my life. It’s been amazing to work with such a dedicated team of guys and show’s what can be accomplished with a lot of hard work.

Movement 2010

Movement 2010

**Are there any new and exciting things planned this year for the Festival? Any little secrets you can spoil us with?
There’s a lot of amazing things planned for the festival this year, Plastikman Live for instance, but I’m guessing everyone’s seen the pre line-up already. Let’s just say it’ll be worth the wait to see the rest of the line-up (and really, I’d hate to get fired!!! haha!)

**What’s going on in Detroit these days?  are there any regular parties or radio shows going on at the moment?

There’s a handful of nice weekly’s going on, Monday night’s in Ann Arbor at Necto if you want your drum & bass fix, there’s a couple fun Thursday weekly’s if you need some house or techno in your life. Also, there’s a great monthly party on Sundays, called SunDayBeats hosted by Auxetic, which is always a really fun time. Currently on Tuesday evening’s from 6-8 Paxahau is hosting a weekly webcast where you can tune in and here some of Detroit best local dj’s and get up to the minute Movement news. Other than that really, it’s mostly one-off events that keep our dance music scene alive. I, unfortunately, don’t get out as much as I used to. Between working in the studio and my *real* job I don’t have much time anymore. It really bums me out because there’s good music all over the city on almost any given night, though, you sometimes may have to hunt it down.

**Detroit is constantly producing top notch producers and DJs, some would say more than any other city in the US, Besides yourself, are there any new guys coming up that we maybe haven’t heard of yet that we should keep an eye out for?
Well you may or may not have heard of him but my good buddy Eric Johnston is making some of my favorite tunes right now. The guys on fire!!! He has a few releases coming out on labels like Leftroom and Archipel and he actually just moved to Vienna so he’ll be greatly missed. Keep an eye for his new release’s though, so on point. I guess the other kid who’s really been on the tip of everyone’s tongue lately is Kyle Hall but I think most everyone who’s into dance music has probably heard about him already (if you haven’t… you’re really missing out!!!) Oh, and I could never forget Matt Abbott aka Secrets…. He’s writing some really cool stuff at the moment. He also throws on hell of a party. His new project that he’s doing with a few guys is called Gary Springs Hunting Club, so amazing. Also, the stable of established artist’s that have come out of Detroit is ridiculous….. Lee Curtiss, Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson,  and Shaun Reeves, their work has spread worldwide and the Visionquest project is about to jump off.  We’ve got DTM doing their thing, Dj Seoul, T. Linder, Darkcube, etc, they kill it all the time. Luke Hess and Bryan Kage aka Reference and their Beretta Music label….. I mean damn, it’s pretty out of hand! There’s so many more people too, it’s insane, I know I forgot a bunch more as well… sorry guys!

**Are you currently working on any new projects?
Things have been pretty busy lately. Last year I had my first European tour which was incredible. Everyone says the first trip overseas is really eye-opening and Europe far surpassed my already high expectations. Playing for the Cityfox guys at Alte Borse in Zurich and also Watergate in Berlin were huge highlights. Really though, I guess I’m always working on new projects. I’m constantly in the studio working on new tunes. Also, I’ve also been helping with my good friends Matt Kingsley and Nima Bararsani with their new booking agency (Bonus Level www.bonuslevel.us ). Keep an eye for Bonus Level events this year, there’s a few things on the horizon with them this year.

**So the rumors are true! I did hear that you are working on a few music projects and that you have really started to take on the production side of things… Any new releases on the horizon?

This rumor is true, as of late I’ve made production my main focus. I have my first digital release coming out on the UK based label Left’d (Leftroom’s digital sub-label) which I’m very excited about. It’s truly honor to have my first release with Matt Tolfrey and his crew. Other than that I have a handful of tracks I’m wrapping up right now that seem to be a step in the right direction. I’ve only been seriously writing music now for about two year’s so I’m picking up more and more as I as I go. Everyday I’m in the studio I learn something new and seeing my projects come together has been really fulfilling. I just moved in with my friend Lee Curtiss, so I’ve been working with him a lot lately, he Seth, Shaun, and Ryan have really helped me a lot and given me creative direction and I’m very grateful for that. I really couldn’t be more excited about this coming year.

Left Room

Left Room

**Last year you toured for a short time with a team of artists from Paxahau, do you plan on doing this again this year, and can you tell us a little about it?
Last year Chuck Flask and I did a few Movement festival warm up parties and they were all a blast. I’ve already kicked off the season with  two warm-up parties in Austin Texas, one at the legendary Stubbs BBQ at the Spin Magazine 25th anniversary party and the other at my great friend and Detroit ex-pat Jon (E)ric’s U Funktion party, both where so much fun. Stubbs was really interesting because I shared the stage with Courtney Love and her newly reunited band Hole. It was their first show in ten year’s, It was pretty cool, I’ve never been a part of an event like that. Really, this year,  we would like to get out to as many cities as possible to promote Movement. We have an event set-up right in Grand Rapids MI which I think will be really fun. If any other show’s pop up we’ll definitely get all the info as soon as we can.

**What is your current DJ and music production set up?
My current DJ set-up is really simple, 2 turntables w/serato & vinyl with a x-one92. My studio set-up is pretty simple right now as well. I’m just using Ableton with a ton of plug-ins, a couple of midi controllers, and a pair of KRK Rokit 5’s. I guess money is the main factor with my studio set-up….there’s a ton of stuff I want and not enough to get all of it!

Thanks so much John for sharing with us, cant wait to see you again in Detroit for the festival!

Interview by Aaron Bliss

Be Sure to keep an eye out on John’s new releases and catch him at the festival this year were he will be playing the main festival and my guess is that he may pop up at an after hrs maybe.

Thanks for all your support and thanks for reading Jack The Box – The Midwest at Night.

Interview and words by Aaron Bliss

Jack the Box, The Midwest at Night…

Key word.. “MIDWEST”

Now, I am not from the Midwest, I’m a transplant. Born and raised in New Orleans, lived in Austin, Tx and in NYC for a good part of my teen years but the Midwest is what I call home. One big reason for this is that the Midwest has a whole region of amazing music culture. Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago, Madison, Nebraska, Milwaukee, Fargo, and yes… Iowa. Now I left some of y’all out but you get the idea.

The Midwest is rich with the history of electronic music. The East and West may have the big shows and the big clubs and even get all the attention of the press (I’m not bitter, I swear) but truth be told, the real funk is here in the Midwest. Say what you will but… This is the birth place of House and Techno. Simple as that.

For this latest podcast/interview/artist profile we are talking to one of Iowa’s finest, Mustafa Avdic.

Another testament of how our music can have a presence in what one may think of as the least likely of places. :)

DISCOGRAPHY: Solar Cathedral, Communique, Klientele, Zuvuya, Music Man, Lobotomy, Giant Squid, & Udopia

Mustafa Avdic was born in Doboj (Bosnia) and has been mixing since 1999. Assisting his long time friend with sound and light shows at local Clubs in Des Moines (Iowa) led to the initial birth of this young DJ/Producer. Since 1999 Mustafa has built a strong fan base for electronic music in the Midwest. While still considered a Rookie he quickly stepped up to the challenge and started producing his own style of Techno with the use of Ableton LIVE and Propellerhead’s Reason programs.

Although Mustafa’s full-time school schedule and job have held him back from spending more time on music production, his goal in life is and continues to be to enlighten and bring joy to those who appreciate the sounds of Techno.

The motivation that he received during his time overseas in the past years, pushed him to create and release his first EP produced with partner Matt Rissi on Chicago’s imprint Zuvuya Recordings, which came out early summer of 2007. This release gained immediate approval and support from the world famous Dave Clarke and was licensed by Belgium’s MusicMan Records to be used on the Internationally spotlighted ‘I LOVE TECHNO 2007’ cd mixed by none other than Dave Clarke himself.

Shortly after the success of their first release Mustafa and Matt Rissi launched Solar Cathedral Recordings all the while their latest releases on Zuvuya and Giant Squid Recordings had hit the top 100 charts on the Beatport and Juno download sites. His releases have gained support from DJ’s like Dubfire, Danny Tengalia, Laurent Garnier, Roger Sanchez, Dave Clarke, DJ Misjah, Alex Bau, Paco Osuna, Mihalis Safras, Mark Broom, Valentino Kanzyani, Marko Nastic and many more. The success of their label is snowballing more and more every day and with a stream of releases scheduled to drop in the upcoming months. The amount of love and respect that the Solar Cathedral boys receive is continuing to grow by the minute.

*Mustafa, tells us a quick up to date overview of what your doing at the moment?

I’m currently in school, and I work part time. Every chance I get to jump in the studio to mix or produce is a blessing. I’m going to be a dad in August so the anticipation is building for that experience.

*What is it that inspired the mix?

I actually do a mix every month, I’m just very skeptical about posting it online. We’re our own worst critics and the flaws stand out more to us than others. I eventually keep my mixes burnt on one CD that I play in my car or at work, that way i can figure out what to do better next time.

*Why none of your own tracks?

This is actually the first mix I’ve done without any of my tracks on it. I simply felt like mixing my favorite tracks for this month.

*Whats is your role with the label?

I’m the co-owner of Solar Cathedral Recordings and our emphasis has been to have a gateway for artists to express their music. I’ve recently helped a buddy of mine start up his label. (Udopia) These two are the only two labels releasing music on a monthly, bi-monthly basis.

solar cathedral recordings

solar cathedral recordings

*What is it like in Iowa?

Umm, how much time do you have? People come and go, but the vibe is certainly different from any other place in the U.S. The kids here LOVE their music/dancing, and on a good night its guaranteed to be packed all night. I personally enjoy it here, especially with the support I get from new kids coming into the scene. I respect a lot of new artists as well, every now and then somebody blows my mind with a mix or a track they produce.

*Are you working on any weekly’s or monthly’s?

Yes, In the past my busy work/school schedule has kept me away from promoting events. I also felt that I needed to learn the necessary steps in order to get the job done right. I’ve been inspired by friends Matt (Sonar) Rissi and Coleman (The Goat) Greenhaw these past few years, and I’ve focused on helping them with their events/promotion instead. I’m currently organizing a montly event in Des Moines named Mutations, more info can be found at
http://iowa-massive.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2000

*Any new projects/releases?

Always! I have a few collaborations I’m working on at the moment, and I’ve also spent the past year working on a downtempo album.

*515 Alive is becoming quite the summer festival, what is the concept behind the festival and how did Solar Cathedral become such a big part of the festivities?

515 Alive is a Urban Art and Music festival that features talent from all over the country. Nobody had expected the festival to snowball into the size that it is today. Initially SC wasn’t involved, but we eventually came to the conclusion that we could handle the TECHNO spectrum of the festival and bring in top notch talent/sound/lighting for our stage. The festival it self had an attendance of about 20,000 people last year, and we looked at it as an opportunity to bring the music we LOVE to the mainstreams. Matt (Rissi) has been in charge of the stage during the day, while I’ve focused on providing the after hours.

Up until last year Des Moines had a “Footloose” law and didn’t allow dancing past 2 a.m. in public. Myself and a dozens of other individuals focused on speaking our mind to the city council to change this law and successfully managed to do so. This year the festival is being moved to a new location, which in my mind is the ideal spot for the festival.

Thank you Mustafa.

I really would like to encourage you all to also take a look at Mustafa’s partner in crime Matt Rissi.  Matt did a podcast for us a few months back and I think it will give you all an idea of what Iowa and the Midwest has to offer.

Keep an eye out here for updates and information on Iowas premier electronic music festival called 515 Alive!  I went last year and the Solar Cathedral stage like all the others was on FIRE!

An interview with Kate Simko

Posted in music on March 8th, 2010 by Aaron Bliss
Kate Simko

Kate Simko

Visit Kate and see her Artist Page at Ghostly/Spectral here

http://ghostly.com/artists/kate-simko

This weekend – Saturday, March 13th Particle People Mpls Present Kate Simko Live! Joining Kate on visuals is the Minneapolis lighting wonder boy, Math Static along with two amazing new comers, Loveless Aphrodite, and COMPLICIT Live!  For this run at Jack the box we turn our focus to Kate Simko and later to Loveless Aphrodite.

Kate Simko…

I could sit here and re-post all the typical things you would read about Kate on any random Google search.  Well… I am not going to do that, I’m going to ask Kate what I think most people want to know. They want to know “Who is Kate Simko really?” Does she like to party or is she some nerd that likes to plug away at the studio day and night? OR, Is it a little of both?  Time to ask Kate and find out!

When I first heard of Kate Simko it had to be when she first started showing up on Spectral compilations and later on her own EP’s.  For quite a while I thought she was from Detroit and didn’t know too much about her besides her smooth, mellow style that always made me buy the record. It wasn’t until I drove to Milwaukee for a Projekt show to hear her in action that I found out how amazing her music is.  Her Live PA blew me away!

Very few things really excite me (ok that’s not true – I am excitable!) but that set was amazing and not what I expected from her. The music was full of life and energy and had a deep and undeniably sexy vibe to it that just made you dance uncontrollably. I knew then that she had to come to Minneapolis.

Kate was kind enough to also share a recent DJ Set with us and I have to say, it shows that she is not only an amzing artist but a class act DJ as well. We were able to get it and share with you today. For the track listing see below the article.  This is a studio promo mix made late last year and is a compilation of some of her favorite tracks from 2009.

So…

I hear a ton about how she grew up in music and is trained in classical, her heritage and family connections to music and so on, but I really think it would be nice to hear about her background in electronic and in dance music. What I would really like to know and show our readers is…

*When did you start getting into the electronic music scene? Did you start off a party kid, a dancer? How were you introduced to the everything?

A friend of mine introduced me to dance music when I was a sophomore in high school.  She was one year older than me, and had been a pretty hard core raver
during Jr. High (at the age of 12 or 13- pretty crazy in retrospect).  In the end, I think her parents sent her to rehab.  She stopped listening to the music and went straight edge, so she gave another high school friend and me all of her mix tapes.  There was everything from DJ Keoki, to raga jungle, to Diz, to Underworld, to booty house.  We had an older friend with a car (because we were too young to drive), and he’d drive us around while we listened to the tapes.  Then, it went from that, to him driving us to the parties in Chicago and around the Midwest.  When we turned 16, we would drive to parties around the Midwest pretty much every weekend.  We heard so much great music back then, it’s a little surreal looking back at some of the line-ups.

*When and what started you into the world of producing electronic music/DJing?

I started buying records and DJ’ing on the radio in college.  I wanted to stay involved with the electronic music scene, but my rave days were over due to a demanding college schedule studying classical piano.  So, I became an “apprentice” on the dance music show as a way to keep up with electronic music.  Just like for many people, college was a time to figure out what I really wanted to for a career, and after some soul searching I realized that I was more passionate about electronic music than classical music.  So, I decided to switch from studying classical music, and take a risk to learn how to make my own music.

*I heard around that you used to be the director for the electronic music side of WNUR radio in Chicago. How was that experience?

WNUR is one of the very best college stations in the U.S., so it was a real honor to be music director of the dance and hip-hop formats for a couple years.  I learned a lot about music, and really grew as a person through that experience.

WNUR CHICAGO

*What role did WNUR play in your growth as a DJ/Producer?

WNUR is the place I learned about a lot of labels and producers.  The former music director, Dave Siska, put together a family tree of house and techno record labels from different countries in Europe and North America, and gave it to me when I started.  I did a lot of studying to get up-to-pace, and tried to learn the context of everything  Then, from there, it turned into the weekly pilgrimage to Gramaphone Records, Dr. Wax, Dusty Groove, etc. where I would pick out records for the station.  I bought a lot of records and listened to tons of music at that time.

Kate Simko

Kate Simko

*Being a Chicago party kid, where did the deep influence from Detroit come into play for you and your style?

I always loved the Detroit sound.  Derrick May, Claude Young, Jeff Mills, and Richie Hawtin were all some of my favorite DJ’s in the 90’s, and we saw a lot of Detroit DJ’s play in Chicago (or travelled to Detroit to bigger parties).  The Detroit sound was always raw, futuristic, and fresh.

Death Is Nothing To Fear vol 3

Death Is Nothing To Fear vol 3

*Tell us the connection to Spectral/Ghostly, how did that become?

I met Sam (label owner of Ghostly/Spectral), at MUTEK in Montreal, around 2004.  We were looking for a label for our second Detalles album (project with Andres Bucci), so it started by me sending that material to Ghostly.  From there, I sent links to my first solo productions,  which were the first ones the label picked up.  I’m very grateful to work with the labels, it’s been a great home base for my music.

*What are some other artists and labels are you working with?  Any new projects on the horizon for our readers to keep an eye out for?

I just did an EP for Eklo, a really nice label out of Paris.  The EP is called “Lost In Time” and has a remix by dOp.
Collaboration-wise, I have a new project with a talented Chicago house producer, Tevo Howard.   It’s a deep house project, with a very Chicago vibe.
Besides that, I’m finishing up my first full-length solo album.  This project has been a cool challenge- excited to get the music out there, for sure.

*I hear that this next Live show in Mpls is going to be a rare one.  That you have decided to take a bit of a break from Live PA and are playing more DJ gigs.  Being so well known for your live sets… What made you make this change?

As a performer, I think your job at a show is do the best possible performance for the time.  DJ’ing gives you more flexibility to adapt to the moment.  So, unless it’s a show that really publicizes that it’s a live set, I don’t think people often have the right level of patience or understanding to appreciate a live set at a club.

Promo Of Kate’s Live PA from last year

*Can you tell us about some of the artists and music that you’re really into at the moment?  Whats in the DJ Bag?

I’m playing a mix of tech-house, minimal, house, and techno.  I’ve been enjoying some French producers especially- Masomenos, Dyed Soundorom, Seuil (from Eklo), as well as the releases on Cityfox, Spectral (of course..), Inxec and Matt Tolfrey.. and much more.

*Whats not in the DJ bag?  What’s in the Ipod/in the car stereo?

Well, I’m just returning from 6 weeks in Buenos Aires, so have been listening to a lot of tango music, classic rock, classic love songs, and Latino music in taxis and at restaurants.  It’s been a nice change.  Very emotional taste in music down there, in general.

*Excited to play Mpls?  Any Expectations about our crazy scene?

Yes, looking forward to it!  Well, you’ve told me that people enjoy live sets in Minneapolis, so it will be fun to play live for some music lovers :)

*What are you most excited about in 2010 besides rockin out in Mpls?
I’m excited to finish my album, and to tour Europe and Japan this spring!

Introducing Loveless Aphrodite…

Posted in music on March 7th, 2010 by Aaron Bliss

A few weeks ago I received an email from Alexia to check out some new and old mixes of hers on Soundcloud. I wasn’t sure who she was so a quick peek on FaceBook and I realized “Hey! I know this person!” I just realized that I see her on the dance floor all the time and see her so into the groove week after week at the Black shows so I figured..  “lets check it out”

A click on the first mix recorded in SanFran some time ago and by the first track I was hooked! By the third track I was actually moved on a deeper more emotional level. Her track selection was like none I had heard before and needed more.  I emailed her back and asked if she would play at Black, needless to say…  She said yes.

Take a moment to here this amazing DJ in action and see just what I did.
