I figure I will start off with something I’m really feeling at the moment and also something that even though it’s from The Big Apple it still has a tie to the Midwest, that connection is soon to come

So – let’s get the first installment of “An Introduction” underway.

STRANJJUR Recordings is a new up and coming label from NYC. It was started by two friends, Kev Obrien and Ab Logic (Smoke City NYC) recently adding Chris Luzz to the team. All three are well respected artists and promoters in the North East so you know from their past projects this will be done in the most pro way. So far, they have proved this with a very strong start and I have to say – these guys are for sure the one to look out for in 2012.

Already moving towards release number three it won’t be hard to see why these guys are going to go far with this label. From what I read the project is under a two part theme… New Artists and New Music. The word Stranjjur is more than just a cool word with a funky cool spelling and logo, It actually has a meaning behind it. They are sticking to releasing music by up and coming artists that are “stranjjurs” if you will Their releases seem to be revolving around a new breed of house music and producer. Expect everything from 80’s electro funk inspired tunes to more modern takes on deep house and techno.

____

The first release was amazing and has been off to an crazy start so I suggest you take a peep at this - Lula Circus - Miami Vices EP with remixes by Pezzner and MANIK. This one is really pushing on this “new/old/future retro/80’s disco” vibe but listen and decide for yourself. I’m loving every moment of this release. This one is getting crazy support from all over the place and every track is getting serious feedback from all your fave jocks like Maya Jane Coles, Lee Curtiss, Catz n Dogz, X-Press 2, Nick Curley, and so many more. I have no doubt you will be hearing this plenty over the next few months. For me, I love every track and remix on the EP, I don’t have one track I prefer at all, I can seriously listen to them all over and over again. Listen below.. enjoy!

Stranjj-001 Lula Circus

______

Their second release is amazing as well – This time coming with little bit different vibe but oddly enough you can see some common themes in this release to the last, they don’t stand out and smack you in the face but the vibe is there…

What can I say besides – Classy this EP is soooo deep and classy, I can’t stop listening to it. This one comes from Andrew Soul with remixes by Kris Wadsworth and Baldo. Again – it’s all good. Check it out for yourself and check out the links to learn more about the artist as well.

Stranjj-002

_________

Stranjj-003 will be out soon and Clips for it are already up! How lucky are we?!?!! Very

Stranjj-003 Features another up and coming artist named Maiki with remixes from Marcin Czubala and Audio Soul Project. This release is really, really different from the “run of the mill house/tech-house sound”. This is fresh and exciting I have to say I can not wait for this one to come out. Here is a string of clips – just a teaser but just enough to show you the strength of this release.

Stranjj-003

_________

Stranjjur is following in the footsteps of a few other imprints all leading the way into a new and refreshing sound of house music. If you like what you read here check out a few of these key words in your google-o-nator…

Hot Natured, Hot Creations, Lower EastRecords, WildKats, Pets Recordings, Culprit LA, Droog, MANIK Armies of the Night, Ellum recordings, El Txef A, Cosmic Cowboys, Manhattan Project (Kev Obrien + Chris Luzz), Matt Tolfrey, Leftroom Recordings, Maya Jane Coles, Maceo Plex, Crosstown Rebels, Lee Brinx, Pets Recordings, Lee Foss, and so many more. this will get you started!!

**So – finishing up – that’s what I wanted to share – not too much on the artists but on the label over all and to this point in it’s life. I am looking forward to going back and revisiting this label and see what it has to offer over the next year.

I really hope you enjoyed learning and listening – Thanks for reading!

On October 15th 2011 Loud & Clear will be hosting BLACK, the long running (almost 4 years now!) Saturday night at the famed First Ave Danceteria’s infamous Record Room (aka VIP Room). This Time, Loud& Clear is proud to present a man known for shaping the face of The Detroit House Sound. With well over 100 releases under his belt and more skymiles then the president of Delta, Terrence brings his world famous talents to Minneapolis.

Parker Music Works Label mate Matt Veloce was able to steal a moment from The Telephone man to ask him a few questions and let y’all in on whats news with Mr. Parker!

____________________________________________

Mr. Telephone Man

Q: You began to DJ in 1980 and were deejaying in Detroit during the rise of the first wave of techno pioneers: Atkins, May, Saunderson, and others. What effect did this have on you and your music?

A: In the early 1980s there was a popular radio DJ in Detroit known as The Electrifying Mojo. There was a mystery around Mojo because no one knew what he looked like, and he (the character) claimed to be from another planet (arriving each night to Detroit on the “Mothership”). In addition to playing music by contemporary artists like Prince and Rick James, Mojo also played futuristic sounding music. One night I was listening to Mojo as he played music like Twilight 22’s “Electric Kingdom”, and Soul Sonic Force’s “Planet Rock”, when suddenly this ultra funky electronic track comes on. It blew me away!!! Back in those days I was a break dancer and I thought this was the best pop locking track I’d ever heard. The track was by Detroit’s own Cybotron (featuring Juan Atkins), and the song was “Alleys Of Your Mind”. There are only a few songs that comes along in one’s lifetime that changes they way the listen to music forever. “Alleys Of Your Mind” was one of those songs for me. I became more curious about electronic music in general, but especially music from Detroit. The rest (as they say) is history!

Electrifying Mojo

Q: Over the years, Detroit has become known in the electronic music community for techno, while you have been more recognized for house music. What led you to embrace house music?

A: I was a big fan of the music coming out of Chicago. Although you have to understand that back 1984/1985, Chicago House and Detroit Techno was quite similar. So while I was into both, I was drawn more to the house music style because of artists like Marshall Jefferson who had massive gospel piano chord arrangements in tracks like “House National Anthem” aka Gotta Have House Music All Night Long. Tracks like Steve Hurley’s “Jack Your Body”, Tyree’s “I Fear The Night”, also had a big effect on my DJing style.

Q: During that time, was it challenging playing house music in a city known for techno?

A: As I said in the early 1980s House & Techno was quite similar. I was normal to play a Farley Jackmaster Funk track and then a Blake Baxter track, and then a Chip E track, and then a Kevin Saunderson track. In the late 1980s into the early 1990s, the sounds progressed and each became more distinctive. At that time is was much hard to be recognized as a house DJ in Detroit. There was a time when some record shops in Detroit would not put up House records made in Detroit vs House records from Chicago, New York, or overseas which made it on the wall of these shops regularly. It was definitely a challenge, however it is always good to be your own person rather than follow the crowd.

Q: You have deejayed for over 30 years in over 100 cities, giving you the unique opportunity to travel the world. What keeps you motivated or inspired when it comes to deejaying?

A: I enjoy mixing music. I still have fun doing it after all these years. It’s exciting to mix a new track with something older. The new music releases keep the art of mixing fresh for me!

Q: What is your favorite or most memorable performance that you’ve given?

A: I have many memorable moments. Like my first trip to DJ overseas (in London, England). One of my most memorable moments was my first DJing gig in Japan. I played for Hiro & DJ Nobu of the Future Terror crew in Chiba City, Japan. One of the best experiences of my life! Since then I have played in Japan many times.

Q: Is there anywhere that you would like to travel that you have not yet been to?

A: I would love to DJ in Australia. I will be playing there for the first time this November. I would also love to DJ in South Africa (and many nations on the continent of Africa), Egypt, China, South America, Mexico, and India. There are many parts of Europe where I haven’t played yet which I would love to visit.

Q: What future trends do you see for house music? Where do you think the sound will go next?

A: The music is constantly evolving so its hard to predict where it will go next. I enjoy where it has gone so far with genres like Drum n Bass, Dubstep, and even a few Trance tunes which I think are cool. It will be interesting to see where it goes!

HotDish is going ALL out for their 2-year anniversary show. They’re WELL aware that the success they’ve had in these two years are due to the family, friends, loved ones, and other BLACK crews (Particle People & Loud N Clear) who have supported them along the way. This 2-year anniversary is…without doubt…a celebration of these amazing folks who give their all to EDM.

The TWO-YEAR ANNIVERSARY BLOWOUT is sure to impress! HotDish’s Nate Laurence & J Matthews have dug in their couch cushions and pockets to bring a true icon of dance music, Lady D (Chicago, IL – D’Lectable Music) to showcase the occasion. Lady D got her start in A&R with AfterHours Records where she was responsible for giving Kaskade his career and signing other huge well-known artists. She has appeared on such labels as BlackJack, Vista, Body Music, and her own imprint, D’Lectable. She has been requested by celebs such as Billy Corgan, Queen Latifah, Dennis Rodman, Black Eyed Peas, and the cast of Cirque Du Solei; she has also played alongside Francois K, King Britt, Ron Trent, Derrick Carter, Heather, Colette, and many more. Lady D has been featured in Billboard, Spin, URB, iDJ, DMA, DJ Mag, Chicago Mag, UR, 5 Mag and more. She’s rocked Europe, Asia, Mexico, Canada, and throughout the USA. A pillar of the Chicago house scene, she’s been a constant player at Smart Bar and is a resident at the city’s most famous and longest running party, Boom Boom Room. This year, Lady D was featured at The Wanderlust Festival and Lollapalooza’s 20th Anniversary on Perry’s stage. She will (without doubt) flatten the Record Room! Starting things off for the show is Minneapolis/Chicago beast of the “jack,” DJ Xcel with middle sets by the hosts.

But enough with that! HotDish’s Nate Laurence talked with DJ Lady D about the Twin Cities, her label, big gigs, and more. Here is the interview:

NL: Queen Lady D! You’re coming to Minneapolis to slam it with us at our flourishing HotDish movement and we’re humbled. From the moment I mentioned your name, a buzz immediately began…no pressure! Is this your first time in Minneapolis? Any thoughts on our long-standing tradition of dance music in the Twin Cities?

LD: Actually it’s my first time in Minneapolis in a while. I played a few random things but nothing consistent. I couldn’t even tell you for who anymore as it’s been that long. I think 1st Avenue is an amazing venue with so much history and it will be fun to hit the decks there for sure.

NL: No doubt we’re glad you’re coming back. Fill us in on some of your inspirations and what we might expect at the show – short of faces melting and boxers dropping.

LD: I have some special things planned to show Minneapolis some love in my set. I love editing! It will be an ultra fun party so just expect smiling faces and asses shaking.

NL: Ooooo….sneaky dub and edits and bouncy stuff. I like it. And, I’m sure there will be no shortage of something a little…well…d’lectable! Talk a little about your record label, D’Lectable, the work you’ve put in, and the incredible artists you’ve found. Anything we should look forward to for D’Lectable?

LD: I just released a single by a guy from NYC who makes music for video games. He goes by Baghdaddy (he’s originally from Iraq) and that came with remixes from Creep (known for glam glitch), Chicago’s own DJ Frique and myself. It’s really diverse but that’s what I love to do – mix it up. Coming in September is a project by a new duo called Adam & Jackson. It’s a three tracker with a reggae/dub influence that should really appeal to the West Coast heads and people who like that sound. In October I’ll be releasing my first fully licensed mix CD since Naked Kaleidoscope. It’s going to illuminate the future sound of Chicago with newer projects from artists like Kate Simko, Green Velvet, Colette, Tevo Howard, Gurtz, Ron Carroll and more.

NL: Really good stuff coming! Looking forward to it. Let’s switch to Lady D as a DJ. Tell us about your residencies, guest spots, your EDM community, and what you’ve worked so hard to create in your niche of Chi-Town!

LD: I play monthly at Chicago’s longest running party: Boom Boom Room. It’s my favorite crowd to play for as it’s the most fun and free loving folks in the city who’ve been at it for over 20 years. They know how to let their freak flag fly and that’s rare these days. I also do a monthly at a spot called Crocodile Lounge. It’s intimate and heads come to dance hard and hear some familiar tunes. I break out vinyl there and that’s still amazing to do and for people to see. Who plays vinyl anymore? I also guest regularly at Smart Bar and various one off’s and clubs around the city. I’ve been building a steady following for years and I like that young and old come out on the regular to hear what I have to offer. My sound really is a hybrid of house, techno and disco so it has that mass appeal.

NL: Very nice. To make you feel better: first, we still have turntables and break out the vinyl at HotDish; second, we LOVE folks who let their freaky fly; and, finally, we’re gluttonous. Regardless, you’ve had the opportunity to play all over the world. Are there any favorite spots, secret hiding spots, or places where you’ve found solace?

LD: I love to travel and experience the different cultures and people everywhere. When I used to play in Toronto I loved the energy there – they had a really healthy nightlife scene. I played six hours once at a spot called Footwork and it was all love! I had an amazing and relaxing time playing with Ira (Gleam Recordings) out in Honolulu. He put me in his condo overlooking Oahu for a week while he stayed at his girls place. I was at the pool everyday until the gig. I definitely found solace there. The New Years gig I played in Bangkok was an experience for the books and the people there were the nicest I’ve ever met. In Thailand they really specialize in being humble and taking care of people, and smiling. I felt warm all over.

NL: I hope we top your favorite’s chart after the night is done. You recently played Lollapalooza’s 20th Anniversary on Perry’s stage. The buzz is wonderful; it’s duly noted that you kicked ass and took names. Talk a little about your experience there.

LD: Lollapalooza is the gig of a lifetime. I went in prepared and did what I had to do. I made Chicago proud when I walked off that stage and the kids showed mad love! It’s a little crazy when you’re up there. The stage is so big and there’s a huge rig, lights everywhere and this massive sound system – it was hot as hell! Then you see the crowd with their hands up jumping around and going nuts and it feels so right. I realized I was the only DJ on that stage to use Pioneer CDJ’s and a mixer – I was the only one to really mix. Everyone was on the Ableton train which is fine – just not for me. The stage manager came to me at the end of the weekend to say that it hadn’t gone unnoticed and that he loved my set!

NL: We CANNOT wait for you to bring that energy here. We’re doing our best to fill the room for you. Trust me, our friends, family, and loved-ones who support HotDish will do the rest. They always do!

Hey all,

I know it’s been a while since I’ve blogged and to be honest I’ve been non-stop busy these days and I know, I know, I do have some things I need to catch up on and some older posts I need to make on Jack the Box but something came my way and I had to share immediately. One of my good friends (and long time undercover lover and sometimes thorn in my side) Kris Wadsworth has been in the giving mood and really excited to share something with our y’all. For the first time that I know of… Kris has decided to share a free track of his. A rare treat no doubt!

Below is a letter from Kris with a little bit of information about the track and it’s origins. At the bottom of the letter there is a download link to the track. This track will only be available for 200 downloads and then it’s gone so for those of you that catch this in time, you now own an exclusive piece of music from one of my favorite artists and close friends.

Enjoy! ”AB”

_______________________________________________________

Detroits Finest

HI! So this experiment on Facebook was pretty fun, huh? I clocked this screen shot before posting this, so it’s well over the originally stated 100 mark and counting. I’m really happy so many of you from around the world are so supportive of what I try to do over here in Detroit. Speaking of Detroit, here is a little “backstory” of this track I am giving to you:

About four years ago, I was asked by a still-to-this-day, relatively unknown, very small, local Detroit “label” to do some work for them. Of course I agreed to it being the young, hungry producer that I was (and still am), but I unfortunately made a mistake. It is very important as an artist to know who you are dealing with no matter where they are located, who they work with, what they are about, who they are personally as human beings, or whatever. This so-called “label” ripped me off. They defaulted on their contract with me due to non-payment, subsequently breaching the contract. That was “water under the bridge” until I found out recently that even after they told me in writing about their alleged removal my piece from their sales catalog due to defaulting on the contract, withholding money from me, slandering me, etc…these same guys were secretly selling my music–with my name on it–illegally FOUR YEARS after this was supposedly said and done. Nice one, huh? And I never saw a dime. I brought this up to them recently and they told me suddenly that they “apologize” and that they are now “actively pursuing” making amends. Four years later? That reeks of bullshit and I’m tired of it.

I would name and shame who I was dealing with, but why give them the press? I’m above the “name game” nonsense. Just for reference, I have the screen shots and all needed proof to sue the hell out of them, but why? I’ll just give it away and hopefully achieve the real reason I make music in the first place: to put smiles on people’s faces. I’m not about pennies, guys, I’m about principles. I love what I do and I pour my literal soul into my music the best I can, so when someone steals my “soul,” it really gets on my nerves. Too many artists out here are getting fucked around by labels and stuff, getting their music ripped off by shady download-for-free sites, not getting paid, getting screwed over, working their asses off doing what a lot of us only know how to do: music. The world gives creative people a hard time enough as it is; we don’t need it from our so-called “peers” as well.

So cheers, you guys! For you, my fans and my friends, the people who I respect the most: here is a “fuck you for ripping me off” track dedicated to the people who truly support me. Keep supporting Detroit’s Finest, your favorite producer who loves you. And if you are a producer out there in electronic music land, be careful who you deal with. It’s a messy world but it’s good to know there is some love left in it, even if it never comes to me from Detroit.

-Kris Wadsworth

PS: by popular request via the long list of commentary on my Facebook post, in the very near future, I will announce a show…one night…one select city in the world that I choose…and give away a shit load of vinyl. I will hand them to you personally and shake your hand, hell, maybe even hug you if you’re up for it. Just as a FURTHER show of appreciation to you for being down. It might be a few months from now or it might be in a year from now. So keep an eye out! WHO LOVES YOU?!

Greetings y’all

I know it’s been a while, I have been swamped like crazy and probably don’t have time to do even this post but I just had to! With all of the current moves in the city like the rise of the Scion nights and Rusko at the Ave and venues like Barfly creating additional space for these crowds because they basically are our growing the loft, there is no doubt that the DubStep scene in the Minni has been on a solid rise over the last couple years.

To help facilitate the growing need for knowledge of the local events Tim Fresenko created the newest addition to the DubStep family http://www.dubstep.mn/ Dubstep.mn is still in it’s baby stages but I can already see that It will be a great way to see whats news in the community.

Take a look for yourself

thanks!
Aaron

His knowledge of the music ran very deep. So when I found out that he was releasing a string of amazing new music I had to know “what makes you tick?!” Below is a list of five records picked and previewed by Deepak Sharma.

From Deepak…

these are records that i’ve played at recent gigs including at national undeground for the rough + tumble night in NYC. My style is more a building a night so there are records that reflect the different times of night. I’ve been playing longer and later sets into the night so these records reflect what people can expect when they come to hear me and the darker, cavernous style I like to play for that time of night.

************************

hope

1. Efdemin “Hope” [diamonds and pearls] – brilliant darker and subtle track with smooth basslines that kick in to give the track great depth – nice track to keep the momentum and build going without being overly dramatic. slick track off a slick record.

2. telefon tel aviv “immolate yourself” (ben klock jack remix) [bpitch control] – when you want to take it up a notch and begin to really rumble and tumble it, this track is perfect. stripped down, punchy and hard minimal. a truly jackin’ and glitchy record to keep the floor moving.

Gashouder

3. Joseph Capriati “Gashounder” [Drumcode] – both sides really make a great impact on the dancefloor with bigger break-downs and huge drums and snares that Capriati is known for. it’s an intense record that’s not for everyone and you really have to time this one well because the raw power can freak out the early pg-13 crowd.

SPC D

4. Roberto Bosco “SPC D” [Figure SPC] – don’t you love when you find a vinyl you can play all 4 tracks? It’s like christmas and hannukah all in one. this ep from bosco has 4 bass-heavy big drum rollers that will keep the floor excited and energetic as you take your set to the next level and lead the crowd into techno hypnotism. while a bigger track in nature, there are subtle changes throughout the tracks to keep it interesting. There is a track named ‘club’ that is appropriately titled – give it a listen and you’ll know why.

5. Pascal Mollin + Thorsten Heiser “The Golden Key” [Touched] – another great record that has 3 tracks that are playable. very heavy, peak hour type stuff that needs a great sound system to make it’s presence felt. you can see the faces melt when this record is played as the raw emotion and the ‘dance like nobody’s watching’ mentality kick in. expect a few hollars in the crowd, but really again, play with caution and time it right.

Deepak Sharma

I also suggest picking up his latest release with Dieter Krause
